PLAY THERAPY                   

An instructional documentary on the techniques of Play Therapy for children with behavioral and learning problems ranging from ADHD to withdrawal.  Produced for York University, England by Dr. Kate Wilson and performed by Dr. Virginia Ryan.  Funded by a grant from York University.  (1987 - Original RT 27 minutes)

The story of Pearlie Roberson, who was a beatiful and pregnant young mother from Chicago's West Side.  Poor and unmarried, from an at-risk comminity, and with little backgound in child bearing and child care, her prospects are limited when she joined the Chicago Parent and Child Center.  Over a period of months, we watch her receive training in nutrition and motherhood, and eventually become an instructor in this pioneering center.

Made in cooperation with Worthington, Hurst and Associates of Chicago and Chicago Head Start, his film follows the careers of two severely withdrawn Head Start children who are being treated with Play Therapy.  This form of therapy involves intense, focused play with a therapist several times a week and is proven to be very successful, both immediately and in the long-term.
